APCA & WCAG 3.0: The Future of Color Contrast
Alongside the established WCAG 2.1 AA/AAA standards, Hue Blender supports APCA (Advanced Perceptual Contrast Algorithm), the contrast model proposed for WCAG 3.0. APCA is designed to better reflect how humans actually perceive text readability — accounting for font size, weight, and polarity (light text on dark vs. dark text on light).
The APCA Lc (Lightness Contrast) value shown above is recommended for accessibility-forward projects and design systems targeting future WCAG 3.0 compliance. Use WCAG 2.1 ratios when you need to meet current legal accessibility requirements, and APCA when designing for perceptual quality and forward compatibility.
APCA is a draft method under active development by the W3C Silver/AGWG working group. Thresholds shown reflect the current public guidance.
